MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The latest Marquette University (MU) Law School Poll released on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, looks toward potential 2024 presidential matchups.

The Republican nominee will be chosen right here in Milwaukee as the host city of the Republican National Convention.

Whoever that nominee is will have an impact on the overall presidential election. The latest MU Law Poll shows Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump as the Republican frontrunners.

"Our poll shows DeSantis doing better against Biden than Trump is," said Charles Franklin, director of the Marquette University Law School Poll. "The caveat here is we're not trying to predict the election in 2024, what we're trying to do is see how the race is shaking up. The answer to that is DeSantis is improving but so is Trump, and Biden is not improving or going down a bit."

While Trump may not be the strong choice in the latest poll, about 20% of respondents say they don't know enough about DeSantis to form any opinion.

"While virtually everybody has an opinion about Trump," said Franklin.

And Trump has still risen in a hypothetical presidential election against Biden.

"In September, Biden led Donald Trump by 10 points in our survey. But the two were tied in this month's survey," said Franklin.

The poll also looked at whether or not Republicans in Congress can rally around Kevin McCarthy to govern the US effectively. It found 41% believe Republicans can unite behind McCarthy, while 58% said they can't.

That was a big question considering how many tries it took the speaker to get elected. Here are the full poll results.
