National petition looking to move Halloween to last Saturday of October

(CBS 58) -- Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year, although in a lot of places trick-or-treat hours came on the Saturday before Halloween.

What if the whole holiday was moved so that it's always on a Saturday? There's a movement to change Halloween from October 31 to the last Saturday in October.

Thousands of people have signed an online petition calling for the change. Supporters point out that most parents don't or can't go out trick-or-treating with their kids and say it would be safer to move Halloween.

"Often times parents are rushing home, they're trying to get the kids fed and in their costumes and out the door," says Scary Mommy writer and editor Cassandra Stone. "If it was on a Saturday, that would kind of eliminate all of that."

Since Halloween is not a federal holiday, the question is how would you move it, even if you wanted to. Many traditionalists do not want to change it.
