New blackout and retro license plates now available for Wisconsin drivers

WisDOT

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers and state officials announced Friday that Wisconsin's newest license plates, a blackout design and a retro butter yellow design, are now available for purchase.

The plates can be bought at most DMVs, participating dealers and third parties that stock Wisconsin plates, and online by clicking here

The blackout plate features an all-black background with white letters, numbers and outline. The retro yellow plate harkens back to the 1970s with black letters on a yellow background and the slogan "America's Dairyland."

Both plates come with a one-time $15 fee plus a $25 annual registration fee. The plates are estimated to generate more than $25 million for the state's transportation fund in the first three years, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said the plates meet customer demand for new options and will provide revenue to fix roads.

The plates are made at Waupun Correctional Institution, where all Wisconsin license plates have been produced since 1921.
