‘All hands on deck’: Push to end youth gun violence continues after stretch of shootings in Milwaukee
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - In the last week, there have been multiple shootings throughout Milwaukee involving victims and suspects under the age of 18.
On Friday April 24, a two-month-old baby was injured in a double shooting near S. 8th St. and W. Arthur Ave.
Earlier this week, an 11-year-old shot at a city worker after trying to steal the worker’s car, then got into a car with two other teens that led to a police chase.
“Some of these situations are happening in the home, we can’t miraculously come to someone’s home but if somebody reaches out to us if you’re having issues with a youth, we can get ahead of it before it escalates,” Milwaukee Community Wellness and Safety Director Karin Tyler said.
Tyler was named director in April and says there is already work being done to slow down youth gun violence ahead of summer.
“We’re going into the summer, so we’re meeting with a lot of what we call our CVI ecosystem which is our community violence intervention ecosystem across the city because we need all hands-on deck with this,” Tyler said.
The city is also working with youth violence prevention groups, like the Peace for Change Alliance.
Peace for Change has a program starting this summer that will pair up five children with five mentors for three months.
At the end of the three months, the kids and mentors will report back to the city on what was learned and provide options for violence prevention.
“Show what can be done if we give the youth the resources that’s needed to help curb the violence,” Peace for Change Executive Director Tracey Dent said. “That’s what is needed is bringing them to the table.”
The goal is to connect with the younger generation, as summer nears.
“We have a lot of great ideas as adults, but we have to hear from the youth,” Tyler said. “I don’t know if we need them to listen as much as we need to listen to them.”
