New details emerge from garage fire earlier this month near 26th and Greenfield

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Fire is sharing more details about the body found after a garage fire earlier this month.

Fire Chief Aaron Lipski says firefighters were called to reports of smoke coming from a building near 26th and Greenfield on Jan. 2.

After putting out the fire, crews searched the garage multiple times, and then found a body the next day.

Lipski says the victim -- identified as 70-year-old Grant Forbes -- appeared to be living in "hoarder conditions".

Lipski says the fire damage and the hoarding conditions made it very difficult to find Forbes.

"The density and the compactness and the tightness of all these different types of debris lead me to make the following conclusion: that no reasonable person, no reasonable firefighter, no reasonable experienced firefighter, would anticipate that there was a person inside this densely packed pile of debris," said Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
