New Hallmark Christmas movie set in Milwaukee; writer tells CBS 58 why he picked the city

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The writer of a Hallmark Christmas movie 'A '90s Christmas' is giving Milwaukee a special gift this holiday season with a film set in the Cream City.

Here's the synopsis on the Hallmark Channel's website:

The movie follows Workaholic lawyer Lucy Miller, who is celebrating her promotion alone on Christmas Eve when a mysterious rideshare experience transports her back to 1999. Reliving the holiday with her mom, sister and best friend – not to mention her high school crush – Lucy gets a second chance to understand where her relationships went wrong. Will this magical journey help her rewrite her future or leave her destined to be alone? Starring Eva BourneChandler MasseyKatherine Barrell and Alex Hook.

The team at the Hallmark Channel said the movie was actually shot in Ontario, Canada. In an email, the film's writer, Ryan Peckinpaugh, said he always wanted to set the beginning of the movie in Chicago as a nod to the great John Hughes Christmas movies he grew up with.

"From there, I expanded my search to a place Lucy could’ve grown up that wasn’t super far away, but far enough away that leaving home felt like a big deal," Peckinpaugh said.

The writer said he always liked the Milwaukee Brewers, so he started looking into Milwaukee which seemed to fit the places he had in mind for scenes from the movie.

"The nostalgic feel of Miss Katie’s Diner, the suburban homes that felt similar to a nice place to grow up; near the big city, but far enough away where innocence of the 90s was still there, and when I read someone say 'people in Wisconsin were born with ice skates on their feet,' I knew I had the right place," Peckinpaugh said.

The team at Hallmark says there are currently two scheduled airings on the Hallmark Channel: Dec. 20 at 12:20 a.m. and Dec. 25 at 8 a.m.
