New male snow leopard debuts at Milwaukee County Zoo
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Zoo has introduced a new male snow leopard, Choto, to the public. That name is pronounced "show-toe," according to the zoo.
Transferred from the Dakota Zoo in Bismark, N.D., Choto has completed a standard 30-day quarantine and recently moved to the Florence Mila Borchert Big Cat Country to acclimate to his new surroundings.
Choto is two years old and joins 9-year-old female snow leopard, Orya. Zookeepers are monitoring both animals for signs of mutual interest as they are seasonal breeders.
Choto was named after a former keeper at the Dakota Zoo and originates from the Nepal language meaning "shorty." Orya's lineage is particularly valuable because her mother, Dshamilja, was born in the wild, a trait under-represented in snow leopards at AZA-accredited zoos.
Visitors interested in seeing Choto can do so during regular zoo hours.
