New video shows kidnapping suspect after alleged victim was freed
Milwaukee Police Department WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) — We have new video of the Franklin man who is accused of kidnapping a woman at gunpoint and threatening to rape her in May.
Angelo Liberto is facing four felony charges.
The new body camera video shows Milwaukee police talking with the victim after she was rescued. It also shows them taking Liberto to jail.
Liberto's victim feared he was going to kill her until she was able to secretly call 911 and officers pulled over the car.
The 17 videos were heavily redacted by MPD to protect the victim.
The 22-year-old Liberto said nothing to officers throughout the videos about his alleged plan to kidnap and threaten his victim.
The videos begin with Milwaukee police officers racing to meet up with Washington County sheriff's deputies.
Deputies pulled over Liberto's car late on May 29. They freed a woman who was handcuffed in the back seat.
According to court records, the woman said Liberto showed up at her house late, unannounced. He had her sit in the back of his car, took her phone away, pulled a gun on her, then a knife. He made her handcuff herself to the door, saying he was going to drive four hours away and rape her.
She was able to sneak her phone back and call 911.
Liberto was handcuffed in a cruiser while officers spoke with the victim. One officer told her, "Being what happened here, this guy may do this to other girls, too."
She had spoken with the deputies, then the police officers. Those interviews were completely redacted.
Early on it was clear the seriousness of what she had escaped, as an officer said to her, "What happened was pretty serious, obviously. Multiple felonies."
Officers called in detectives while the woman waited. "So, the detectives are going to be coming," they said. "They're going to record a statement and things like that." "Ok."
Back at Liberto's car, his phone was on low battery. To help preserve it, officers carefully went into the car to switch it to airplane mode.
There, they saw "Knife's in the center. Right there. Gun, I think, is in the back. On the floor." Another officer said, "Oh, there's a case for the gun."
Nearly three hours later—after 6 am—MPD was ready to take Liberto from the Washington County deputies. "We'll go over to this squad. We gotta take you down to Milwaukee."
Other officers searched his car, finding the handcuffs and a saw, duct tape and a tarp, and a shovel and other items.
One detective found a "Hog-tying kit. Was probably planning on using that on her." Another officer said, "Lot of cleaning supplies here."
Liberto was taken to the Milwaukee County Jail.
There is body camera footage from the Washington County deputies, but Washington County said it will not be released until this case is finished.
Angelo Liberto is scheduled to return to court on September 10.
