MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- Back-to-school season is right around the corner and families are getting ready to send their kids back to the classroom.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee is stepping in to lend a helping hand with an event to make sure kids have what they need.
Saturday the organization held its annual back-to-school event at Milwaukee County Zoo.
"This is such an exciting day. We have 500 children and family members who participate in our program who are having a back-to-school celebration," said President and Ceo Neil Willenson.
Families were greeted at the entrance of the zoo and given backpacks, school supplies, and even Nike sneakers.
Willenson says it feels great to be able to support their families as the program continues to grow. "When a child has a mentor, it's proven they have great educational outcomes," he said.
Kids like Micah Otto say they love being part of the program.
"It's pretty rewarding. They put all their time and energy into this for us," he said.
To continue its mission to support kids, the organization is putting out a call for more mentors.
Michah's mentor, Brett Kash says its' the most rewarding experience.
"You get to have a huge impact in one person's life," said Kash.
