MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department confirmed an officer was hit by a vehicle and injured during a chase near 40th and Villard Tuesday, Oct. 4.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said officers with MPD's special investigation division were watching a home allegedly connected to illegal firearms and the distribution of heroin and cocaine.

One of the suspects left the home and drove away. Officers followed and stopped the car a few blocks away near 42nd and Fairmount, but then the suspect drove off.

The suspect then crashed into an uninvolved vehicle at 40th and Villard and fled on foot. The driver of the uninvolved vehicle was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Yaya, a neighbor nearby, said, "I've lived in neighborhoods where stuff happens every day, I've never heard a police response like that quick."

During the foot chase, a second suspect -that was connected to the first and driving another car- intentionally hit a chasing officer that was running across the street.

Chief Norman said, "There are individuals who are more interested in helping those who are creating harm to our community, rather than supporting those that are putting their lives on the line for our community."

A detective shot at the second suspect, who fled the scene. Police do not know if the second suspect was hit, and that person is still on the run.

Yaya said, "We heard five or six gunshots ring out. After the shots you heard a bunch of sirens."

Police say the first suspect is a 29-year-old man. A gun he tried to throw away was recovered.

The injured officer is a 29-year-old man with 10 years of service. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment of serious, but non-fatal injuries. Chief Norman said, "We understand the officer did suffer some serious injuries. He is still being treated at this particular time."

The detective who shot his firearm is a 33-year-old man with over 15 years of service. He will be placed on administrative duty as is standard in these incidents.
