MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee police were involved in a shooting near 68th and Capitol on Friday morning, Oct. 4.
Police say they arrived at the scene of a home near 68th and Capitol and found three victims fleeing the residence by jumping off a second-story porch. Officials say one individual had multiple gunshot wounds and was armed with a gun. Police moved the victims to safety and the suspect exited the residence onto the second-story porch with a firearm.
According to MPD Chief Jeffrey Norman, police gave commands to drop the gun, and the suspect did not comply, at which point an officer fired at the suspect.
The suspect retreated into the residence. A tactical enforcement unit attempted negotiations with the suspect, and after no response, entered the residence where they found the 33-year-old male suspect deceased from a gunshot wound. Police say the cause of the suspect's injury is unknown at this time. A firearm was recovered next to him.
"We are trying to have a peaceful resolution," said Chief Norman. "It takes time and unfortunately once we were able to gain entry after those particular type of tools had been utilized, we did find him unfortunately deceased."
The 33-year-old shooting victim that fled the residence was taken to an area hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The officer that discharged his duty weapon is a 28-year-old man with over three years of service. He will be placed on administrative duty as is routine in officer-involved shooting investigations. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team will be investigating this incident.
Residents in the area tell us they were worried for their safety, as they heard loud noises and witnessed police running through their yards.
"Freaky," said resident Amber Jaeger. "I'm glad that my youngest one was at school because she probably would have been freaked out about all the police running around. You don't see stuff like that. You know, we've been here for about two and a half years, and we've never seen anything like that in the area."
