Officials: West Milwaukee man beat mother to death with baseball bat during argument
Milwaukee County Jail/CBS 58 WEST MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 38-year-old West Milwaukee man is accused of beating his mother to death with a baseball bat.
According to a criminal complaint, authorities were called to an apartment complex near 44th and Mitchell on the morning of Feb. 24. Inside a unit, officials located 66-year-old Cheryl Jenkins lying face down in a guest bedroom in a pool of blood with a wooden baseball bat on top of her. Lifesaving measures were performed but Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators spoke with the 911 caller, identified as Jenkins' boyfriend, who stated Jenkins' son, Hayward Jenkins, arrived at the apartment the night prior.
Jenkins' boyfriend told officials, per the complaint, he fell asleep between 10 and 10:30 p.m. due to some medication he takes and told Jenkins to come to bed with him. At 7:30 a.m., he reportedly attempted to call Jenkins on his phone as he believed she moved to another bedroom with her son, but she didn't answer. Jenkins' boyfriend entered the other bedroom and found Jenkins and called 911.
According to the complaint, investigators located numerous surveillance videos showing 38-year-old Hayward Jenkins fleeing the apartment complex around 6 a.m. and hopping on a Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) bus.
A few hours later, officers received a tip Hayward Jenkins was at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel and he was taken into custody.
The criminal complaint says, in a mirandarized statement, Hayward Jenkins stated he and his mother got into an argument over silver coins, money, and "her not listening when he was trying to express himself." He stated his mother, "had scissors up to him, and was looking at him like she was going to do something."
Hayward Jenkins allegedly felt he and his mom were "getting nowhere" and he had exhausted every situation he could. He reportedly stated he got angry with the situation and "flipped out." That's when, according to the complaint, Hayward Jenkins said he got a baseball bat and struck his mother in the head with the bat multiple times while she was sitting in a chair.
Hayward Jenkins, per the complaint, stated "he was wrong for murdering my mother."
Hayward Jenkins has been charged with one count of first degree intentional homicide.
In court on Sunday, March 1, a judge set bond for Jenkins at $300,000.
