OSHKOSH, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Authorities are investigating a deadly plane crash near EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh Monday, July 22. It's the first day of the aviation event that brings in thousands of visitors from all over the world.
Sheriff's deputies and firefighters responding to the crash in the eastern Wisconsin town of Nekimi found the aircraft fully engulfed in flames, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office said.
The two people on board did not survive.
According to CEO and Chairman of the Board at EAA Jack Pelton, the plane was on its way to the event.
“The sheriff’s been on the site and they’re continuing to work with NTSB as part of the investigation. The airport was closed and is back open now," said Pelton.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
The crash was first reported by air traffic control at Whitman Airport.
