PEWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Olympics are rapidly approaching and teams across the world are preparing for their chance at gold. But in Pewaukee, a different type of tournament is coming up -- this time, with the goal of helping others.

The Race to Feed event takes place at Waukesha County Technical College Thursday, Jan. 22. It's a day that helps children facing weekend hunger.

Hundreds of volunteers will race against the clock to see who can pack the most bags of food. Those bags will then be distributed to local students in the Blessing in a Backpack program.

"This is a really important day for us, because everyone loves to come out and support the mission, and they love to pack the food," said event chairperson and board member Diana Schmidt. "We try to bridge that gap from when the bell rings on Friday, to when it rings again on Monday morning, and this food is a helpful supplement for that"

Teams are expecting to pack more than 10,000 bags of food.

The Race to Feed event kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday.
