Racine Fire Department responds to multiple fire calls related to fireworks
CBS 58 RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Fire Department says they responded to multiple fires overnight in the city all due to fireworks.
In total, fire crews battled three structure fires in under two hours on Sunday, July 5, all sparked by the fireworks
The first call came in shortly after Midnight, for report of a dumpster on fire next to a business near 20th and Lathrop.
After extinguishing the fire, spent fireworks were found in the dumpster. Crews said the cause of the fire was improper disposal of fireworks.
Damages estimates to the fence and dumpster total $6,000.
Racine fire crews then responded to a house fire near Knoll Pl and Brentwood Drive, at around 1:09 a.m.
The fire coming from the rear of the home was put out in 21 minutes. All four occupants and 1 dog were able to exit the home safely as no injuries were reported.
Working smoke alarms were found in the home and alerted the residents of the fire. The Racine Fire Department says the cause of that fire was also improper disposal of fireworks. The fire is not considered suspicious.
Damage estimates for the home total $97,000.
Finally, the Racine Fire Department responded to reports of a garage fire near 5th Ave and Shoreland Drive, at around 1:39 a.m.
Upon arrival, officials say the detached garage was fully engulfed in fire and spreading to adjacent properties.
Crews were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes, and total loss was stopped within 30 minutes.
No injuries occurred to residents of fire personnel.
The cause of this fire was also improper disposal of fireworks and is not considered suspicious.
Damage totals for this fire are $38,000. The American Red Cross has been called to assist with temporary housing for the residents.
