RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Summer is here and instead of kicking off the season hanging with friends or hitting the pool, one teen in Racine is dedicating his free time to help his community.

"My grandma always told me go ahead and help people out that need help," said Mark Cook.

Taking his grandmas advice to heart, 14-year-old Mark Cook is doing just that, going out of his way to put others first.

“I appreciate it," said Lora Bingen who lives in Racine. "I’m unable to mow my lawn, so I do depend on my neighbors. You know otherwise I would be fined by the city.”

Cook is mowing the lawn for those who need a little extra help around the house, or are unable to do it themselves for no cost.

"Oh, it relieves a lot of stress," said Bingen. "That’s one less thing I have to worry about.”

This summer he has one goal in mind.

"Do at least 50 or more yards for completely free,” said Cook.

Hoping his act of kindness from yard to yard, will leave a positive impact and inspire others to give back.

"I was hoping that if I did it, other people would go ahead and do it as an act of kindness," said Cook. "That’s the reason I did it, to help people out."

His Mom, Kayla Cook says after posting his services on Facebook, her inbox flooded with people asking for help.

"It makes you feel good as a mom to see your child out there helping other people," said Kayla Cook. “He's always been a very kindhearted, heart of gold kind of kid."

Kayla Cook says her son is ready to go the extra mile to help his community.

"Oh yeah, he's eager," said Kayla Cook. "Every morning he's up and he's ready to go and I think 50 is just the start. I think we are going to go way past that.”
