Racine Unified School District purchases all-terrain wheelchairs for field trips, outdoor learning

CBS 58

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- We got a look at some all-terrain wheelchairs in use by the Racine Unified School District Wednesday, Oct. 29.

The chairs are designed to navigate uneven ground, trails, grass, sand, and other surfaces.

The district just bought three of the chairs. One of them was taken on a field trip to River Bend Nature Center on Monday, and again on Wednesday.

CBS 58 watched as students were trained on how to use them during physical education class, and the students are excited about the purchase.

"There was so much joy. The parents that were there, the staff at River Bend and Equal Justice Center were thrilled to have them," said Leah Polack, physical therapist. "The children were able to go everywhere their peers went and they were great days."

The district tells us they were able to buy these chairs thanks to the efforts of staff and parents who want to ensure equitable access to experiences for all students.
