RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Racine Zoo announced Tuesday, March 31 that it will soon welcome Ayubu, a 5-year-old Eastern black rhino male arriving from the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kan.

Ayubu will spend at least 30 days in quarantine in the Land of Giants rhino barn before going on exhibit. His move is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, which works to maintain genetic diversity among captive populations, according to the Tuesday press release.

The Racine Zoo says eastern black rhinos are critically endangered, with wild populations dropping from around 70,000 in the 1970s to roughly 1,650 today with the species being targeted by poachers for its horns.

The two zoos have spent the past year preparing for the transfer, with Racine staff preparing the enclosure and Lee Richardson staff working on crate training for the trip.
