NOW: Reduce your carbon footprint this Earth Day with a compost bin

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Taking your waste and using it to provide nutrient-rich soil for your garden is just one way to reduce your carbon footprint. Melissa Tashjian is the owner of Compost Crusader. They make it easy to compost. Put all of your organic material into a bin and they'll pick it up. You can also buy soil by the bucket from Compost Crusader.

If you also want to start your own compost Tashjian recommends saving leaves and other brush to help with your compost pile.

"I've been doing it for over a decade and, basically, I utilize the leaves from the trees. I actually stockpile them in the fall so I can continue to make contributions all throughout winter," said Tashjian. whenever I'm adding my food scraps, I try to create this little hole and then I contribute my food scraps and then I bury it, so not to attract animals, but also the action of that helps speed up the composting process."

If you want to compost meat and dairy, you'll need to utilize a service like Compost Crusader since they are not allowed in backyard composts.
