MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Tributes are pouring in for the late civil rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson.

In a statement, his family said he died peacefully Tuesday morning, surrounded by loved ones.

Reaction from Wisconsin

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers shared the following statement:

"Rev. Jesse Jackson inspired generations, reminding us to keep hope alive and believe in the better future we could build by building together. He will be missed."

Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes wrote:

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson shared the following statement on Jackson's passing:

"Jesse Jackson was a civil rights icon, a national political pioneer, and a masterful community organizer. He was also a frequent visitor to Milwaukee. His passing is a time to reflect on his remarkable legacy."

Senator Tammy Baldwin shared on X:

"Reverend Jesse Jackson was a giant in the fight for civil rights, and all Americans are better for his work. Today, we remember his incredible legacy and life’s work to uplift the oppressed, build bridges, and make justice for all a reality."

State Senator Julian Bradley reacted to Jackson's death on X

"Jesse and I crossed paths only once, when he spoke at UW–La Crosse. Our politics had long since diverged, often sharply. Still, I was curious to see one of the best orators I'd ever heard. I walked out after he unfairly, and wrongly, compared Scott Walker to George Wallace.

Inspiration doesn't always come from people you agree with. Sometimes it comes from witnessing passion, courage, and a willingness to stand up. You never know who might be watching or what moment might stick with someone for a lifetime.

Rest in peace, Jesse Jackson."
