ELM GROVE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A memorial service is planned for a retired police officer who's remembered for a heroic act in Elm Grove

John Krahn was an officer with the village department in 2009.

In May of that year, he tried to rescue a mother and child who were inside a car stuck on a railroad track as a freight train approached.

The train hit the car, and while the mother escaped and the 2-year-old boy was unharmed, Officer Krahn suffered injuries that resulted in multiple surgeries in the years that followed.

He died last week at the age of 57.

A celebration of Officer Krahn's life is planned for Jan. 23 in Elm Grove.
