GERMANTOWN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- People in Germantown are mourning the death of their retired police chief, Peter Hoell, on Wednesday, July 3.

Hoell served 30 years with the village police department, 16 of them as chief. He retired in 2019.

A statement from the police department praised his passion and commitment.

In 2021, Chief Hoell shared with CBS 58 the story of his sexual assault by a priest when he was 12 years old. He told us he revealed the incident, hoping it would give strength to other victims.

No cause of death was given, but in April, Hoell said in statement that he was dealing with a "long term illness."
