MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Before the clock strikes midnight, Scott Johansson has already prepared for a hectic evening.

New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights for rideshare drivers and for good reason. Johansson says it’s better to call someone than to risk your safety and the safety of others on the road.

“Extremely busy, extremely,” said Johansson. “Know your options of getting around town. Just a few clicks away, the phone will come right on. I’ll be working all night.”

Last year, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation recorded nearly 400 crashes caused by impaired drivers during the holidays. Johansson says rideshares are just one way to keep yourself and everyone around you safe.

“There’s lots of drunk drivers out there, especially during the holidays, so I’m a safer option,” said Johansson.

He’s not the only option.

“People are looking for and choosing the safe option for transportation and two, they’re integrating this program into their planning which is an encouraging trend and one we hope to continue to see grow,” said Alison Hanrahan with Molson Coors.

Molson Coors, in partnership with the Milwaukee County Transit System will also be providing free rides.

“We’ve been able to provide over 1 million free rides here locally in Milwaukee,” said Hanrahan.

When the clock strikes midnight, Johansson says start the new year with your foot off the pedal.

“If you don’t have an option, someone could get one for you. It’s not that hard to ask for a ride,” said Johansson.
