Rising Rock River floodwaters turn Ixonia backyard into a lake ahead of family wedding
CBS 58 IXONIA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Along the river in Ixonia, Wisconsin, recent storms have pushed water over its banks, flooding yards, fields, and nearby roads and leaving one family’s backyard underwater.
What was once a maintained lawn is now a flooded expanse surrounding Todd Watermolen's home, part of a known floodplain that he says can quickly change when heavy rain hits.
Watermolen said, “To the fence line there is where we typically would mow.”
He said, “The Rock River is about a quarter mile away; this is a floodplain. We knew that the water was going to get higher and it did.”
Days after the storms, the water remained in place.
He said, “It’s stayed at this elevation since four days ago and it hasn’t really gone down.”
The flooding has also impacted travel nearby, with water spreading across flat roads that drivers continue to attempt to cross.
He said, “The road gets flooded, it’s flat.”
He added that drivers still push through the high water in vehicles.
He said, “People in their trucks and cars go through it and it flows out from them like a boat when they’re going through there pretty fast.”
Despite the conditions, the family is looking ahead to a planned backyard wedding for their daughter just a couple of months away, hoping the waters recede in time.
He said, “That was one of the risks we talked about when we agreed to have it at our house here.”
He added, “We’re looking forward to that, that’s in July, so hopefully the water’s gone by then.”
