Senate GOP passes gender-transition ban for children, Evers vows to veto

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Senate Republicans approved legislation that would prohibit children from receiving gender-transition treatment, a bill Democratic Gov. Tony Evers promised to veto.

Under the proposal, medical providers would be banned from providing treatments to minors who want to transition to a gender that matches their identity.

The bill passed the Senate along party lines, with all Republicans in favor and Democrats against. The measure will now head to Evers' desk, who plans to prevent it from becoming law.

It comes as Republican lawmakers have followed a nationwide trend in introducing a series of bills this session that target transgender youth.

Another bill passed by Assembly Republicans last week would ban students from playing on sports teams that don't align with their gender assigned at birth. It has yet to receive a public hearing in the Senate.

Earlier in the day, Evers proclaimed Oct. 17 as "Rise up for LGBTQ Youth Day," to honor over two million LGBTQ children in the United States.
