Shigellosis reported at Milwaukee elementary school

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) announced Friday, Nov. 15, it is actively working with a local elementary school due to a shigellosis exposure that has occurred. 

According to a news release, MHD is providing guidance to affected individuals at La Escuela Fratney, located at 3255 N Fratney Street in Milwaukee. 

Shigellosis is a bacterial infection caused by Shigella bacteria, which can spread through contaminated food, water, or contact with fecal material. Symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, typically appearing 1–2 days after exposure.

Families are encouraged to practice thorough handwashing and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.

Shigellosis is a Category II reportable illness in Wisconsin, requiring health care providers to report cases within 72 hours.
