Some public services to be impacted by RNC security zone
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Many places in downtown Milwaukee have chosen to close for the week ahead of the RNC, meaning some public services will unavailable. There are still some options for those in need of shelter and food.
Security restrictions have already begun near Fiserv Forum ahead of the convention, limiting access to several public buildings.
The Municipal Court Building will be closed through July 19th. People are being asked to contact them via phone or email next week.
MATC’s downtown campus will also be closed through July 20th. There are also several non-profits in the area shutting down in-person services, including Community Advocates.
There will, however, be a place for people to go who need food and shelter. “I'm standing literally a stone's throw away from the security zone, which will start here on 9th Street, which borders our property at St. Benedicts Capuchin Community Services,” said Father Mike Bertram.
St. Benedict’s provides vial resources to the community including its meal program. Instead of shutting down, meals will still be provided Sunday through Thursday.
St. Ben’s will also host an overnight shelter Sunday through Friday evening, taking 40 men and 20 women.
"Many of the poor and homeless are sleeping in downtown Milwaukee. They can’t do that with the convention going on, so we are opening up our dining space and hospitality as a shelter,” said Father Mike.
Guests are asked to use 12th and State to access the building to avoid RNC security restrictions.
There will also be a cooling center available next week at the Coggs Building on 12th and Vliet.
