Some Wisconsin beaches face closures on Labor Day due to strong currents, dangerous bacteria
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- On Labor Day, people looking to spend the last moments of summer by the water might have been disappointed with some beach closures.
According to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), some beaches in Southeast Wisconsin were closed due to dangerous currents. Many of those specific closures were in the Racine area.
Other beaches along the shoreline of Lake Michigan had warnings for elevated bacteria, including one closure at South Shore Beach. Last week, some Milwaukee beaches were closed because of elevated E. coli levels.
Most of the Milwaukee's beaches, like Bradford Beach, opened back up Labor Day.
Maya Martin was celebrating her sister's birthday at McKinley Beach in Milwaukee. She said she felt some of the currents but didn't go into the water very far.
“I fearlessly went into the water," Martin said. “I hadn't been planning on going in and swimming, but the water is really warm right now.”
Jonathan Shaw spent his Labor Day at Klode Park Beach, in Whitefish Bay, with his wife and children.
“I obviously went headfirst in the water and I’m really enjoying the refreshing atmosphere of the lake," Shaw said.
You can find beach closings and advisories for Great Lakes coastal beaches and select inland beaches in Wisconsin from Memorial Day through Labor Day by zooming in on the DNR's map or searching for a beach.
Beach health conditions can change quickly. The DNR says online that signs posted at the beach by the local public health departments reflect the most up-to-date information.
