MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Community groups hosted a day of action on the first day of early voting in Milwaukee.
Souls to the Polls provided a party bus to take voters to the early voting site at MATC's downtown campus. The rides were between MATC and Turner Hall. Back at Turner Hall, event attendees enjoyed free food, activities, and voting resources.
Organizers say the goal is to build excitement and get more people to cast their ballots before Nov. 5. "People don't realize that this election affects generations to come," said Anita Johnson, outreach and voter education with Souls to the Polls.
Early voters told CBS 58 it was important to make a plan to cast their ballots early. "I see a lot of ads and I see that they say that this is one of the most important elections in history...that's why I really came over here and voted," said Nigel Harvey.
"It's very important to vote because as you know, people before us fought for this right -- so I'm out here voting. I'm trying to represent for everybody in my community," said Zahriah Nwanosike.
Souls to the Polls says they want to keep this momentum going through November. "I'm sure we've had over 100 people here today," said Johnson.
The day of action also included dozens of volunteers to help spark voter engagement. Volunteers will play an important role in getting people to the polls ahead of Election Day and on Election Day as well.
