It’s a question that has yet to be answered at the state capitol. On Wednesday, May 13, the Assembly gaveled into session at 10 a.m. Before that, republicans addressed the press to tout the plan and how it’s what is best for the state.
“I have the benefit of not going to door to door as much as my colleagues behind me are but one of the things that I have heard from my friends and neighbors as they are coming up to me saying ‘what are you going to do with all your free time’ is that they still want us to fix the problems that affect their daily lives,” State Rep. Robin Vos, the Republican Assembly Speaker, said.
Republicans reiterated their support for the legislation highlighting that the bill will give people in the state relief now. The legislation permanently eliminates state income taxes on tips and overtime. Unlike the federal elimination which expires at the end of 2028. It would also give stimulus checks to Wisconsinites who worked in the state in 2024 and filed their taxes.
Single filers could get up to $300 for married couples that filed jointly could get up to $600. While the plan has Governor Tony Evers support, not all democrats are on board.
Many have called this irresponsible - especially at a time when the latest Producer Price Index shows that inflation is the highest it has been since 2022. Democrats say the money that will be distributed to people in the state won’t go to who needs it.
“People making under 15,000 dollars a year would get an average payment from this plan of 74 pennies that’s less than the cost of the stamp to mail it out,” said State Rep. Ryan Clancy
A Democrat representing Milwaukee said, “1.36 million Wisconsin residents will not get a check at all under this plan. Many people in poverty will get zero, many older adults will get zero.”
The way the plan stands currently, one democratic senator told CBS 58's Capitol Correspondent Meredith Hackler that all democrats in senate are a no vote.
The senate an assembly are set to reconvene at some point Wednesday evening.
