MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction released more than $16 million in state aid to Milwaukee Public Schools, they announced on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The money had been withheld until the district completed required financial reporting, according to state officials.
The funds cover fiscal year 2022-23 programs for special education and students raising children.
DPI said in a Wednesday statement the release follows steps taken by Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, who joined the district in March and has prioritized strengthening its financial reporting systems after a state audit.
Officials said another $25 million in aid could be released in the coming weeks when external auditors submit final reports for the 2023-24 fiscal year and improvement plans are approved. That release would represent the full amount of funding previously withheld.
MPS has reportedly begun transitioning to updated data platforms aligned with DPI systems and is working with the Council of the Great City Schools for technical support.
Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Missy Zombor said the release ensures critical programs and services can continue without disruption.
