'Their jaws dropped': Kenosha teacher receives more than $100,000 classroom makeover

KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It's National Teacher Appreciation Week and one Kenosha teacher is definitely feeling the love.

"It was almost as if it felt like a dream," said Allison Locy, a teacher at Grant Elementary School. "I couldn't imagine something so great was going to be coming to Kenosha and to my classroom of first graders."

Teaching at Grant Elementary for three years, Locy says she never expected to win a more than $100,000 classroom makeover from Staples Business Advantage.

"I applied almost on a whim, thinking it could never be me, I could never be the one to win, and sure enough I got the email saying I won," said Locy.

The company revamped her classroom over spring break, and she says seeing the transformation from before to after was unbelievable for her and her students.

"The kids were very excited," said Locy. "They came in, their jaws dropped. They could not believe it. Their first reaction was to go touch everything and play with the new toys."

"Wow," said first grader Kyrie Gooch. "We looked everywhere, and it was like really cool."

Receiving new whiteboards, furniture, an array of educational toys and plenty of supplies for the whole school, she says it's a game changer.

"Seeing them take ownership of the space and getting used to the reality that this is now theirs," said Locy. "They deserve all of these great things."

While students say they love the makeover, one of the best parts was seeing their teacher's reaction.

"I looked at her and she was so excited," said Gooch.
