MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For many, autumn brings allergies, but if you're feeling symptoms longer and stronger than usual, you're not alone.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, pollen seasons now start 20 days earlier and last 10 days longer, compared to 30 years ago.

Doctors say that's because of climate change, and it's likely the new normal.

"I usually have fall allergies, but this is over the top," said Milwaukee resident, Elaine Maly.

Sneezing, coughing, and itchy eyes are the telltale signs of seasonal allergies, and it for many folks, it seems to be sticking around.

"I think just because it's been warmer, I don't know if that actually has anything to do with it," said Milwaukee resident, Ksenia Dombo.

That does have something to do with it, according to Dr. Mark Hermanoff, an allergy specialist at Aurora Health Care.

"It's beautiful weather right now, but it's also good weather to grow mold, it's good weather for pollen season to last longer," Dr. Hermanoff told CBS 58.

Right now, he said the main culprits are ragweed and mold from dead leaves.

"It can aggravate sinus infections, it can lead to severe infections that might require treatment or antibiotics, and most importantly it can aggravate asthma," Dr. Hermanoff said.

He recommends those with asthma have inhalers ready and look into daily medication.

For allergies, over-the -counter antihistamines will help, along with limiting exposure.

"Change clothes, if you need to, take a shower, don't go to bed with the mold or pollen on your hair," Dr. Hermanoff said.

He recommends identifying what triggers your allergies and making a plan to treat it.

"I think you can expect your allergy seasons to start sooner, to last longer, and to be more intense," he explained.

Another climate related trigger is air pollution.

Dr. Hermanoff said fires out west can trigger asthma and allergies, even here in Wisconsin.

He says to check the air quality before you leave the house, and to take antihistamines daily for the best results.
