Caught on camera: Three cited for riding scooters on I-94

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Three people have been cited for riding scooters on the freeway Monday, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office.

It happened on I-94 near the Marquette Interchange, one of the busiest areas of the city. Deputies responded to westbound I-94 at 20th Street around 1 p.m.

A sheriff’s deputy pulled the group over and gave them a ride off the freeway at W. 25th Street.

The scooter riders told deputies they were visiting from Texas and were using their GPS to navigate to the Harley Davidson Museum on the scooters.

“We obviously don’t give an intelligence test before people take these things out,” Mayor Barrett said. “Why someone would think that it makes sense to take one of these scooters on the interstate is beyond me.”

Up until now, the biggest problem has been people riding on the sidewalks instead of the street.  It led the mayor to temporarily suspend the program and warn residents that if they don’t start following the rules, the scooters can disappear.

“This is a pilot program, and that means that we can very quickly change things if it’s not working,” Barrett said. “People have to use a little common sense here, and if you’re taking a scooter on the expressway, you’re not using common sense.”

The three were cited for riding on the freeway.  It will cost them each $204.

I cannot believe that Milwaukee has taken on the Scooters! They are nothing but dangerous and riders are simply asking for trouble. My daughter, who lives in another state, decided to try one out one night. There are no lights on them and no helmet laws. She was in the middle of traffic when the backpack she had on shifted and she went flying over the front of it, hitting her face and head on the scooter - and the road! She suffered injuries that now, 6 mos. later are still causing problems. And she was lucky!! A number of people have been permanently harmed and there have been deaths. What on earth has possessed the city of Milwaukee to put people in harms way! Take them off the streets before the same thing happens here!
