MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Highways across the United States are busy as millions hit the roads as the Labor Day holiday weekend comes to an end. This is the most expensive Labor Day at the pumps in history, with the national average for a gallon of gas sitting at $4.15.

According to AAA, the national average had not surpassed $4 per gallon on Labor Day, as the previous record from 2012 had the average cost of gasoline at $3.82.

"I don't like it, like everyone. You're spending money here, you have less money to spend elsewhere," shared Chris Koehnke who was filling his own gas tank on Monday morning.

Gasoline being nearly $1 more expensive than this same time last year is impacting travel for those like Jordan Rivera who said, "I wanted to go to Chicago but with the prices being this high, I'm not taking this to Chicago." To fill up his Mustang, it cost nearly $80 Monday, which makes plans, more difficult.

"I can't take this anywhere far because it'd be a waste of gas and mileage, I have to either buy Ubers or get rides somewhere else," he continued.

Former truck driver Frank says he has to fill up at least once a week, noticing prices tick up slowly.

"It's getting more expensive every time you come down here to get gas... I have a tendency not to go as far," he said.

Experts say the cause of the spike is the war with Iran and "continued volatility" in the strait of Hormuz.

"The very first time I bought gas was $.27 cents a gallon and it's gone up from there ridiculously," -- Frank

Wisconsin, according to AAA, is the 10th least expensive gasoline market as our average sits at $3.80.

Now that the summer travel season is coming to its end, along with refineries making a less expensive winter blend, we should start to see some relief at the pump.
