U.S. Secret Service is 'fully prepared' for RNC, says no changes will be made to current security plans
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The U.S. Secret Service will not be making any changes to their current security plans for the Republican National Convention, despite an assassination attempt on Saturday of former president Donald Trump.
During a news conference Sunday afternoon, government officials said they are "fully prepared" for the massive event.
“We are continuously monitoring information related to the event, so we are confident in the plans that we have and we’re moving forward with those plans," said Audrey Gibson-Cicchino, the RNC Coordinator for the Secret Service.
Late Sunday night, crews were still hard at work securing the area by putting up blockades and barricades throughout downtown as police officers guided both foot and vehicle traffic.
Currently, state law allows guns inside of the RNC's soft security zone.
“Wisconsin is an open-carry state and therefore the City of Milwaukee and no other jurisdiction in this state can supersede that state law," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “We did take action from a local level to ban items that we could ban, so we used our authority already at a municipal level to take that sort of security precaution.”
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said while everyone needs to respect the law, people wielding weapons need to take it responsibly.
“As the Chief Executive of our police department here, it is important that we are also understanding the concern in our city. So, this is for those who are attending the RNC, but we are taking care of this city. Period," Norman said. "We got this."
A spokesman with the FBI said there are no specific articulated threats directed toward the RNC or its attendees at this time.
Vehicle perimeters will go into effect at 2 a.m. on Monday, July 15.
If you are in a car, expect law enforcement and K9s to search the vehicle's exterior, hood, and trunk.
