UWM-Waukesha bids goodbye to its band program as University closes its doors after spring semester

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- They say if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. This statement has been true for more than three decades for a University of Wisconsin Milwaukee-Waukesha band director.
A band is only as good as the conductor leading. Craig Hurst has been doing that for more than 30 years.
“I love playing music, conducting music, teaching music,” said Hurst. “There’s a certain chemistry that exists in the band during our rehearsals that I cannot find adequate words to describe.”
For Hurst and the 40 members of the Windy Hill Symphonic Band, each time these instruments and its musicians come together, it's special.
“Everyone comes out of a rehearsal and a performance feeling very good about what we’ve done,” said Hurst.
On April 25, this band will play its most important concert yet.
“The Windy Hill Symphonic Band will have its last ever performance one week from tonight,” said Hurst.
The UWM-Waukesha will close its doors this summer.
“With the university closing, the band will also cease to exist,” said Hurst.
While this performance may be his final one, Hurst says he’s honored to have lived a life conducting this group.
“We hope that it’ll be – one it’ll be enjoyable not only to our audience, but to members of the band as well,” said Hurst. “I have been able to spend my life and my career doing what I love.”
