MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 22-year-old Milwaukee man was arrested and taken to a hospital after a shootout with Milwaukee police officers.

Officers were dispatched to an alleged shooting near Sherman and Capitol on Wednesday, July 17 at around 10:30 p.m.

MPD says they encountered the man who was inside the gas station that was wanted for a double shooting on Tuesday, July 16.

He reportedly went into the back of the gas station as officers approached and gave the suspect several commands to show his hands, but officials say the suspect disregarded the commands, took out a firearm and fired shots towards the officers and people inside the store.

At that time, an officer discharged his firearm at the suspect. MPD says officers retreated to cover and continued to give the suspect commands to drop the gun and show his hands.

The suspect again is said to have waved his firearm at the officers, at which time an officer discharged his weapon. Officers continued to give the suspect commands, but the suspect allegedly did not comply, until the suspect eventually ran out of the store and fired more shots at officers, followed by officers returning fire and hitting the suspect.

Additional force was used to take the suspect into custody, at which point he was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other reported injuries from the gunfire. No shooting victims were located.

CBS 58 spoke with Cassiopeia Holts who lives near the area, who said when she heard about the shooting, she wasn't surprised.

"Truth be told, I was kind of just like it's another day? Which is very sad to say," Holts said. "It's just unsafe and unsettling, especially as a single woman but just as a person, period."

Holts said her young children now recognize the sound of gunshots -- something she says shouldn't be happening.

"It's very quiet, like we really don't have a lot of issues in our neighborhood but once you hit Sherman, it's a completely different world," Holts said, noting she is looking for a new place to move to. "If I'm on E, I'll go to another gas station up Capitol. "It's a gas station I used to frequent when I moved over here last year but I try to avoid that gas station now like the plague."

MPD says the suspect’s rifle was recovered at the scene.

It was determined the suspect was wanted for a double shooting that occurred on July 16 near 29th and Melvina. Criminal charges will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.

The officers involved in this incident are a 39-year-old man with over five years of service, a 31-year-old man with over four years of service and a 25-year-old man with over four years of service. MPD says the officers will be placed on administrative duty as is routine in officer involved shootings.

The Milwaukee Police Homicide Unit will be investigating this incident.
