Washington County sheriff: 1 dead in Town of Erin crash

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A fatal crash is under investigation in the Town of Erin, in Washington County. 

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, early Thursday, Aug. 12, a caller reported seeing the aftermath of a crash on Dublin Drive, north of O'Connell Street. 

The caller was able to get the driver out of the vehicle before deputies arrived. Life-saving efforts were performed by first responders but were unsuccessful. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Authorities say an initial investigation indicated the vehicle was traveling northbound on Dublin Drive after negotiating the curve on O’Connell Street. The vehicle traveled left of center, went off-road left and struck a tree in the west ditch line. Officials say the top of the vehicle was almost completely sheared off exposing the entire passenger compartment and the driver was partially ejected. It's believed he was wearing a seatbelt, authorities say.  

The crash remains under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.
