Waukesha County closing long-term Huber facility
WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Waukesha County Sheriff's Department announced the Huber program facility will close. According to a news release from Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson, the reasons include limited funding sources, increased personnel costs, and significant inflation.
The current Huber program -- according to the release -- is run out of a building that is approximately 80 years old and was never meant to be a corrections facility. The building condition is in disrepair and the cost to staff the facility continues to drive up the overtime costs to the county.
Sheriff Severson said, it is his intent to utilize electronic monitoring technologies for all inmates assigned to the Huber program. This will allow for GPS and alcohol monitoring, both which are not utilized within the current program.
The Sheriff says the closure will allow staff currently assigned to the Huber facility to be utilized in the main jail operations which will reduce the need for overtime to fill positions.
Sheriff Severson said in part:
"This decision is not an easy one. The closing of the Huber Facility has been imminent for years. I have made every effort to continue to operate the program in its current form. Current financial realities dictate that I must make a change. I have a responsibility to the citizens of this county and I intend to continue making decisions in their best interest. I don’t lose sight of my responsibility to operate within the confines of the County Board approved budget. This helps me accomplish that."
