'We are Waukesha strong': Preparation for Waukesha's 62nd Annual Christmas Parade underway

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In the heart of downtown Waukesha, dozens gathered celebrating more than just the holiday spirit.

“Just how everyone pulls together and stays together,” said Andy Gretke, a Waukesha resident.

For Waukesha residents, this time of year is about coming together.

"Why?" said Gretke. "Because we are Waukesha strong. We stay together, we work together, we play together, we celebrate together."

The ceremonial tree lighting is the beginning of the city's holiday festivities, with preparation underway for its 62nd Annual Christmas Parade.

This year marks four years since tragedy struck the parade in 2021. The community is continuing to heal.

"So many people were struck not physically, but mentally with that terrible tragedy," said Jill Littlefield, a Waukesha resident. "They all still need support. Those band kids, those little kids, people watching the parade."

They're supporting the dozens of people injured and keeping the memory of the six people killed alive.

"Over the last several years we’ve had a remembrance walk and so it’s two people carrying that banner saying we remember and Waukesha strong. Behind them are six individuals that are carrying six lanterns."

The city's holiday traditions reminding those gathered what's truly important, community.

"It helps them give hope that there are people and community people that care about being together and supporting each other," said Littlefield.

Holding their loved ones closer and staying Waukesha strong together.

"It is so important, because we want to see Waukesha be strong, be forward," said Gretke. "Accentuate positive and eliminate the negative.”

The City of Waukesha's 62nd Annual Christmas Parade will be this Sunday, Dec. 7, at 4:00 p.m.
