Wehr Nature Centers hosts 46th annual 'Maple Sugar Days' 🍁
FRANKLIN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wehr Nature Center is celebrating their Maple Sugar Days!
The event is now in its 46th year.
Besides snacking on some warm pancakes with Wisconsin maple syrup, guests heard stories behind the delicious and sticky substance, learning about the old and new methods of making syrup.
They also got to drill a log and hammer in a spile.
This is something you can do in your own backyard if you have a maple tree!
"The sugar maple is the real 'celebetree' of the Wehr Nature Center, the sugar maple produces - our state tree - produces the most sugar, but really you can tap any other maples in your yard, birch trees, black walnuts, it will just have a different flavor," said Carly Hintz, Wehr Nature Center director.
Once the sap is tapped from the tree, it's boiled down to maximize the sugar in it.
Hintz tells us the sap is only three percent sugar and 97 percent water.
Now, just how is sap in maple trees? CBS 58 was told the sap gets triggered from warm days and cold nights so it's constantly moving up and down the tree.
