WEST BEND, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The first significant snowfall of the year can bring with it some unknowns.

"Early season snow operations are always interesting," said Doug Neumann, Public Works Director for the City of West Bend. "Working out the kinks with all the equipment, training new employees. Always an interesting time."

Wednesday morning, Neumann informed his employees they would need to prepare for a long Wednesday night into Thursday morning with roughly five inches of snow expected during the overnight hours. Rain all day on Wednesday could make for challenging conditions when it comes to snow preparations and clean-up.

"Storms like this, that start with rain and then transition to snow, they're difficult to manage because you don't have that opportunity to apply pre-treatment," Neumann explained. "We're hoping by the morning commute to have the roads cleared up. The morning commute will be nice and smooth for all drivers."

The City of West Bend has roughly 20 drivers ready to help with road cleanup. Seven of those drivers are new this year.

With just over 500 lane miles of roadway throughout the City of West Bend, Neumann says his team will have 16 to 20 trucks on the roads at a time all night long. Following a night of plowing, his employees will be responsible for their other day jobs, including garbage collection and working at the water and parks departments.

"It's going to be a long, drug out operation for us," Neumann said. "We're prepared. We're ready to go."
