Wisconsin DNR stresses snowmobile safety following significant snowfall
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- As the area is welcoming its first notable snowfall of the year, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued a Wednesday, Jan. 10 release to remind snowmobilers to take ride with caution.
The DNR's advice follows a report detailing 16 fatal snowmobile accidents in the early part of 2023, with alcohol reportedly involved in 10 of the cases.
Riders are advised to stay within their limits and adhere strictly to designated trails, which is particularly pertinent as the opening of many trails is expected soon.
Among the other safety tips from DNR include avoiding unfamiliar areas, slowing down at night and being cautious of ice conditions, as well as inlets, outlets or narrows that could have thin ice. The DNR does not monitor ice conditions, and they recommend contacting local sport shops for local updates. Proper clothing and equipment are recommended, particularly a life jacket or float coat, in the event that a rider falls through ice.
