Wisconsin DOT announces expansion of electric vehicle charging network
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced grants to improve the state’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The program aims to support 53 new charging stations, making life a bit easier for the more than 23,000 EVs registered in Wisconsin.
The initiative is part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program.
"This EV charging network will support drivers, businesses, tourists and our economy and workforce as we move towards a cleaner, more sustainable, and more efficient future in Wisconsin," said Gov. Tony Evers in a Thursday, May 23 press release.
The charging stations will be constructed along Wisconsin’s Alternative Fuel Corridor, ensuring statewide coverage for drivers.
The Wisconsin DOT has allocated $23.3 million for the project, part of the $78 million the state will receive over five years under the NEVI program.
"This is a robust plan that will support people no matter where they live or travel in Wisconsin," said Wisconsin DOT Secretary Craig Thompson in the press release. "We’re looking forward to a time when EV drivers don’t have to worry about where to find their next charge."
These new charging stations will be built by private companies and will include locations at fuel retailers, hotels and restaurants, with two Tribal Nations receiving over $800,000 in funding.
Construction is expected to begin as early as late summer.
