RHODE ISLAND (CBS 58) -- In a press conference Sunday night, Dec. 14, the Providence Police Department announced they determined there was not enough evidence to prosecute the person of interest they detained in the Brown University shooting, so they will be released.

Sources initially told CBS 58 that person was a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin.

Sunday night, the Cedarburg Police Department confirmed the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was in Cedarburg conducting interviews related to the Brown University shooting.

Officials stated they received a tip leading them to that person.

According to CNN, the 24-year-old was taken into custody at a hotel in Rhode Island with two handguns and loaded magazines. But now, authorities determined that's not who they are looking for and that the investigation is ongoing.

"Certainly, there was some degree of evidence that pointed to this individual, but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed, and over the last 24 hours, leading into just, just very recently, that evidence now points in a different direction," said Attorney General Peter Neronha in the press conference. "So, what that means is that this person of interest needs to be and should be released."

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said there's no way of knowing if the gunman responsible for the shooting has left the state and they're searching for additional video evidence. The governor of Rhode Island said there is still a lot left in the investigation.
