With less than 1 week until Election Day, all eyes are on Wisconsin
WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- There's less than one week until Election Day in Wisconsin. On April 1, voters will elect a justice to the state's Supreme Court in a race that could flip the court's makeup.
The race for Wisconsin's Supreme Court is now the most expensive judicial race in American history. Mora than $80 million have been spent in total by both candidates. It's a race voters say has them feeling anxious about the results.
“This is the most important race there’s gonna be in the whole year," said Mordecai Lee, a political expert at UW-Milwaukee. “Running for the Supreme Court nowadays, in Wisconsin, is no different than running for governor or running for U.S. Senate.”
It's a race that could flip the court's liberal majority to conservative. Voters will decide between conservative candidate Brad Schimel or Dane County Judge Susan Crawford. Schimel recently received an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
“I’m trying not to focus on it too much and just be like, vote for who’s right, but at the same time, it’s giving me anxiety," said Cadence Silva, a UW-Milwaukee student.
It's also an expensive race, according to Lee.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if voters are getting confused and really disgusted because it's really hard to imagine what it is to have a race in Wisconsin that costs $100 million," said Lee.
Some voters say as political ads continue to increase, they're left with anxiety.
“I like to do my own research. I try to stay away from the political ads because I think that bashing the other person doesn't really speak too much for your character," said Silva.
Yet, many are still encouraging those around them to vote. More than 500,000 absentee ballots have been turned in already. That's well ahead of the pace during the 2023 SCOWIS election.
“I don’t care who you vote for, just vote. You cannot complain about what’s going on in the country and not do anything about it," said Jax Romero, a UW-Milwaukee student.
