Woman charged, accused of causing crash that seriously injured her 2-year-old child
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 23-year-old Milwaukee woman is facing charges for a crash that seriously injured her 2-year-old child.
The crash happened Saturday, April 29, near Sherman and Burleigh. Officials say a county bus was traveling east on Burleigh when it was struck by a black Nissan traveling south on Sherman.
A 2-year-old boy, who was a passenger in the Nissan, suffered critical injuries.
According to a criminal complaint, Shannon Sutters admitted to driving the Nissan at the time of the crash. Her 2-year-old child was not in a car seat or booster at the time of the crash. Sutters allegedly stated her son was buckled in, but she knows he can unbuckle himself. The complaint later noted all three seatbelts in the backseat were fastened and the vehicle did not have any sort of child seat.
Moments before the crash, Sutters told officials the dashboard on the Nissan went out, including the speedometer, gas tank and odometer. Sutters allegedly stated she was driving for approximately two minutes like this and admitted she could have pulled over but didn't. Sutters told investigators she knew she was going through a red light and didn't see the bus coming. Sutters allegedly stated she swerved to try and avoid the bus but hit it anyways.
The complaint says, as she was going through the intersection, Sutters' son unbuckled himself and was crawling in between the front driver's seat and front passenger seat.
Sutters went on to admit she doesn't have a valid driver's license and she only had a permit in 2018, but never got an actual license.
Sutters has been charged with one count of second degree recklessly endangering safety and knowingly operate a motor vehicle without a valid license, causing great bodily harm.
