“You don’t know which way to turn”: West Allis holds cookout for flooding victims

WEST ALLIS, Wis (CBS 58) - It’s been almost a week since major flash flooding hit parts of southeastern Wisconsin and left hundreds of homes with damage.
West Allis saw major flooding and had dozens of homes filled with water, destroying some basements and first floors.
“It’s so beyond horrifically sad, literally just watching these people’s lives get thrown away and helping them do it,” said West Allis District Four Alderwoman Patty Novak.
On Saturday, Aug. 16, West Allis officials held a cookout for the community to give people still recovering a break from the cleanup process and the resources they still need.
“Everybody has stepped up, it has been incredible," West Allis District Two Alderwoman Marissa Nowling said. “This is something you see on the news, but you never think it’s going to be in your neighborhood.”
Kimberly Golden lives in West Allis and had major flooding in her basement that destroyed her furnace, washer, dryer, hot water heater, and her husband’s office.
“It’s stressful, you don’t know which way to turn,” Golden said. “Everyone's been very helpful, this is nice that they did this so we could talk to others because certainly, there’s many that are worse.”
Volunteers from all over the city were at the cookout on Saturday and provided food, cleaning kits, and more resources to help those still recovering.
Daryl Hoffmann lives in West Allis and had four feet of water in his basement that destroyed a bathroom, living space area, and more.
“We’re all just trying to pitch in, we’re a very tight knit neighborhood,” Hoffmann said. “Our neighbors are fantastic and we’re all just trying to get through this together.”
City officials also provided 211 forms for people to fill out due to most people not having flood insurance on their homes.
