MFD: 1 dead, 1 person taken to hospital after house fire near 11th and Washington Street
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A late-night fire took place in a two-story wooden house near 11th and Washington, resulting in one fatality and one injury on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
The Milwaukee Fire Dept. tells CBS 58 that they received the call after 11:30 p.m.
Twelve residents were reportedly in the house when the fire began. Firefighters rescued one person who died at the scene, while another was injured and transported to the hospital.
Officials say it took approximately 45 minutes for the fire crew to control the fire.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced residents.
Firefighters went out into the neighborhood Wednesday, checking for working smoke alarms and installing new ones for free.
"We can't stress it enough; you must have a working smoke detector in your home. The smoke alarms are going to be your first line of defense, essentially, if something happens. If you're asleep, you can't smell smoke," said Milwaukee Fire Department Assistant Chief Schuyler Belott.
If you don't have a working smoke alarm in your home, the Milwaukee Fire Department will come out and install one for free.
